Intellectual Property
For many companies, Intellectual Property is a major asset. It represents
the unique creative efforts that make a company stand out from its competitors.
Aware of its great importance, Guernsey has been modernising its Intellectual
Property laws to become a leader in this field.
Intellectual Property includes:
- Patents, to protect in a broad way new devices, processes, biotechnology and, these days, even
business methods
- Registered Designs, to protect articles where appearance is novel
- Registered Trade Marks, to protect valuable brand names and logos.
- Copyright to protect artistic, literary and musical works, as well as computer programs
- Other specialist rights such as Plant Variety Rights, Performers’
Rights, etc.
Also for the individual entrepreneur, Intellectual Property is the key to
realising the value of creativity. Without Intellectual Property protection, great ideas can quickly become free-for-all.
Fine if you are a philanthropist. Not so good if you are trying to build a business.
Guernsey will be an ideal location for those holding valuable Intellectual
Property rights, especially where they can be exploited in other countries.
